The wait is finally over. The NBA is back!
After an offseason filled with blockbuster moves, surprising trades, and plenty of championship discussions, we’re finally getting some meaningful basketball again.
And what an opening slate we’ve got.
The defending champion New York Knicks begin their title defense against a completely revamped Philadelphia 76ers team. San Antonio and Oklahoma City renew their growing rivalry, while Detroit looks to make an early statement against Boston.
Three games, six teams, and plenty of storylines.
Let’s get into our official Ethical Sports Takes opening-night predictions!
Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons
EST Pick: Detroit Pistons
We’re starting the season by backing Detroit!
The Pistons were outstanding last season, finishing with a 60–22 record and securing the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, their impressive regular season ended in disappointment when Cleveland eliminated them in the second round.
Now it’s time to prove that last season wasn’t a one-off.
Cade Cunningham has established himself as one of the NBA’s best young guards, and Detroit has built a talented roster around him. The additions of John Collins and Isaiah Joe should provide some extra offensive options, although losing Isaiah Stewart certainly hurts.
Boston isn’t going to make things easy.
Jayson Tatum is back, and the Celtics have added Paul George and Mitchell Robinson. However, losing Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia is a massive change for a team that has relied on his production for years.
Boston still has plenty of talent, but it’ll take time to see how everything fits together.
Detroit won three of its four regular-season meetings against Boston last season, and we’re expecting the Pistons to carry that confidence into this matchup.
Give us Detroit to start the season with a victory!
Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks
EST Pick: New York Knicks
This might be the most anticipated opening-night matchup in years.
LeBron James in a Philadelphia 76ers jersey. Jaylen Brown joining him. Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey already waiting.
What an absolutely ridiculous collection of talent.
On paper, Philadelphia might have the most dangerous starting lineup in basketball. LeBron remains an elite playmaker, Brown is coming off an outstanding season, Maxey continues to develop into a superstar, and a healthy Embiid is almost impossible to stop.
But here’s the problem.
There is only one basketball.
All four players are accustomed to having major offensive responsibilities, and figuring out how to share those opportunities won’t happen overnight.
And to be clear, I genuinely believe Philadelphia will be the better team by the end of the season. Once these players develop chemistry and figure out how to maximize each other’s strengths, the 76ers could be an absolute nightmare for the rest of the league.
But opening night is a different story.
I just cannot imagine the Knicks losing their home opener after winning an NBA championship.
New York is coming off its first title since 1973, and Madison Square Garden is going to be absolutely electric. The championship celebrations, the energy from the crowd, and the excitement of beginning a title defense will make this an incredibly difficult environment for Philadelphia.
Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns already know how to win together, and the Knicks have the advantage of bringing back a championship-winning core.
Philadelphia might have the better roster on paper, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the 76ers are playing better basketball than New York a few months from now.
But on a night when the Knicks are celebrating a championship in front of their own fans?
I just can’t see them losing.
The Knicks begin their title defense with a victory!
Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs
EST Pick: San Antonio Spurs
What better way to close opening night than with a rematch of last season’s Western Conference Finals?
San Antonio defeated Oklahoma City in seven games before eventually falling to New York in the NBA Finals.
And something tells us these two teams will be seeing plenty more of each other over the next several years.
Let’s start with Victor Wembanyama.
The guy is an absolute nightmare.
His combination of size, mobility, scoring ability, and defensive dominance makes him one of the most difficult players in basketball to game-plan against.
And the scary part? He’s still getting better.
San Antonio also has Dylan Harper, Stephon Castle, and De’Aaron Fox alongside him, giving the Spurs an exciting combination of young talent and established production.
Oklahoma City certainly isn’t lacking star power either.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is a two-time MVP, Jalen Williams remains an outstanding two-way player, and Chet Holmgren gives the Thunder another dangerous presence in the frontcourt.
But Oklahoma City lost several important rotation players during the offseason, including Luguentz Dort, Aaron Wiggins, and Isaiah Joe.
Those departures could make a difference, particularly against a San Antonio team that gave the Thunder problems throughout last season.
The Spurs won eight of their 12 meetings with Oklahoma City across all competitions last year.
That’s not a coincidence.
San Antonio has demonstrated that it can match up with the Thunder, and we’re expecting Wembanyama to set the tone once again.
Oklahoma City will remain one of the favorites to win the championship, but this matchup belongs to San Antonio.
The Spurs open their season with a statement victory!
Final Thoughts
Three games, three predictions, and the beginning of what should be an incredible NBA season.
We’re backing Detroit to make an early statement, New York to celebrate its championship with a victory, and San Antonio to continue its success against Oklahoma City.
Of course, opening night doesn’t determine who wins a championship. Teams need time to develop chemistry, adjust to new teammates, and establish their identities.
But that doesn’t make these games any less exciting.
The NBA is finally back, and Ethical Sports Takes will be covering it all season long!
