Jerry Jeudy was once considered one of the most exciting wide receiver prospects in college football. At Alabama, his route running, explosiveness, and ability to create separation made him look like a future NFL superstar. However, six years after entering the league as a first-round selection, Jeudy’s professional career has been far more inconsistent than many expected.
Now, his future with the Cleveland Browns is uncertain. According to reports, Cleveland is reportedly seeking a third- or fourth-round draft pick in exchange for the former Alabama standout. While no trade has been confirmed, the possibility of Jeudy becoming available raises several interesting questions.
Why hasn’t Jeudy lived up to the expectations surrounding him at Alabama? Which NFL teams should consider acquiring him? And perhaps most importantly, is he actually worth a third-round pick?
From Alabama Superstar to an Inconsistent NFL Career
When the Denver Broncos selected Jerry Jeudy with the 15th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, expectations were understandably high. At Alabama, Jeudy was one of the most polished wide receivers in the country, winning the 2018 Biletnikoff Award as college football’s outstanding receiver.
During the 2018 season, he recorded 68 receptions for 1,315 yards and 14 touchdowns. He followed that performance with another excellent campaign in 2019, producing 77 catches for 1,163 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Jeudy’s greatest strength was his route running. His ability to create separation, change direction, and exploit defensive coverage made him extremely difficult to defend. Playing in Alabama’s explosive offense allowed him to consistently showcase those abilities.
But the NFL has been a different story.
Jeudy recorded 856 receiving yards during his rookie season in Denver and nearly reached 1,000 yards in 2022 despite appearing in only 15 games. There were flashes of the player many expected him to become, but the consistent production of an elite NFL receiver never materialized.
However, I believe the biggest reason for Jeudy’s struggles has been the quarterback situations he’s experienced throughout his career.
Why Hasn’t Jerry Jeudy Reached His Alabama Potential?
Look at the quarterbacks Jeudy has played with throughout his NFL career. In Denver, he dealt with an offense that struggled to establish consistent quarterback play. Moving to Cleveland didn’t necessarily improve his circumstances, as the Browns have experienced their own quarterback instability.
It’s difficult for any receiver to consistently produce when the passing offense changes from season to season. Jeudy’s game relies heavily on timing and separation. A quarterback must recognize when he gets open and deliver the football accurately.
We saw what could happen when Jeudy received opportunities in 2024. With Jameis Winston providing an aggressive passing approach, Jeudy enjoyed some of the best performances of his career, including a remarkable 235-yard game against his former team, the Denver Broncos.
He finished that season with 90 receptions for 1,229 yards and four touchdowns, earning a Pro Bowl selection.
That season demonstrated that the talent Jeudy displayed at Alabama hadn’t disappeared. When given opportunities in an offense willing to push the ball downfield, he was capable of producing at a high level.
Unfortunately, that success didn’t carry over into 2025. Jeudy finished with just 50 receptions for 602 yards and two touchdowns. Through the first five games of 2026, he has managed only eight receptions for 81 yards without a touchdown.
Now, that doesn’t mean Jeudy has been perfect. There have been inconsistencies in his performances, and he hasn’t always capitalized on his opportunities. However, I don’t believe it’s fair to place the majority of the blame on him.
Jeudy has spent much of his NFL career playing in unstable passing offenses. We have yet to see what he could consistently accomplish alongside an elite quarterback in a well-established offensive system.
Rather than simply labeling him a disappointment, perhaps we should ask whether he’s ever truly been placed in the right situation to succeed.
Why Would Cleveland Consider Trading Him?
Cleveland’s receiving corps looks considerably different from the one Jeudy joined in 2024. Young receivers Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion have emerged as important pieces of the Browns’ offense, giving the organization younger options to develop.
With Jeudy’s offensive role shrinking, Cleveland has to consider whether keeping him makes sense financially and strategically.
The Browns originally acquired Jeudy from Denver in exchange for fifth- and sixth-round selections in the 2024 NFL Draft before signing him to a three-year, contract extension.
If Cleveland can receive a third- or fourth-round selection in return, the organization would potentially recover more valuable draft capital than it originally surrendered to acquire him.
For a team looking to build for the future, that could be an attractive proposition.
However, the Browns shouldn’t necessarily rush into a deal. Jeudy is still only 27 years old and has demonstrated the ability to produce at a Pro Bowl level. Trading him simply because his current production has declined could prove costly if he rediscovers that form elsewhere.
Nevertheless, if Cleveland is serious about moving him, several contenders should be interested.
Which Teams Should Trade for Jerry Jeudy?
1. Kansas City Chiefs — The Best Opportunity
Kansas City should be among the first teams calling Cleveland.
The Chiefs are firmly in win-now mode with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback and Andy Reid designing the offense. Adding another receiver capable of creating separation would give Mahomes another weapon as Kansas City pursues another championship.
Jeudy wouldn’t have to carry the receiving corps. Playing alongside Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Travis Kelce would allow him to operate in a complementary role while benefiting from arguably the best quarterback situation of his NFL career.
More importantly, Kansas City has the draft capital to make a deal.
The Chiefs acquired an additional third-round selection in the 2027 NFL Draft when they traded cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams. That gives Kansas City two third-round selections, providing additional flexibility to pursue a veteran receiver without sacrificing its only pick in that round.
For a franchise competing for another Super Bowl, using one of those selections to acquire an established receiver could make sense.
I wouldn’t immediately surrender a third-round pick, but Kansas City is better positioned than most contenders to consider that price.
For Jeudy, the opportunity to play alongside Mahomes could be exactly what his career needs. If quarterback instability has been the biggest obstacle preventing him from reaching his potential, Kansas City would provide an opportunity to change that narrative.
2. San Francisco 49ers — A Perfect Fit for a Win-Now Team
San Francisco is another team that should seriously consider making a call.
The 49ers have dealt with significant injuries at wide receiver, including Ricky Pearsall being ruled out for the season. Other injuries have further tested the team’s receiving depth, making additional help a legitimate consideration.
Kyle Shanahan’s offense could be an excellent fit for Jeudy. His route-running ability would complement a system that emphasizes timing, separation, and creating opportunities for receivers in space.
Jeudy wouldn’t necessarily have to become the focal point of the offense. San Francisco already possesses established playmakers, and adding another receiver capable of consistently creating separation could make the offense even more difficult to defend.
The 49ers also possess their third- and fourth-round selections in the 2027 NFL Draft, meaning the organization has the draft capital necessary to negotiate with Cleveland.
Most importantly, San Francisco is in win-now mode.
The 49ers aren’t looking toward a distant rebuilding project. They’re attempting to compete for a Super Bowl, and adding another talented receiver could help strengthen their championship ambitions.
Of all the potential destinations, San Francisco might offer the best combination of immediate opportunity, offensive fit, and need.
3. Philadelphia Eagles — An Injury-Driven Opportunity
Philadelphia is another team worth watching.
The Eagles have dealt with injuries throughout their receiving corps, including DeVonta Smith and Marquise Brown. With Philadelphia looking to compete in the NFC, additional receiving depth could become increasingly important.
Jeudy could give Jalen Hurts another experienced option while providing insurance if the Eagles continue to struggle with injuries.
Philadelphia also offers an established offensive environment with championship expectations, which could benefit a receiver looking for a fresh start.
However, the Eagles’ draft capital makes a potential deal more complicated.
Philadelphia traded its 2027 third-round selection to Minnesota in the Jonathan Greenard deal, meaning the organization would have to consider offering a fourth-round pick or constructing a different trade package.
The Eagles might not be as aggressive as Kansas City or San Francisco, but they should at least explore Cleveland’s asking price.
For a contender dealing with receiving injuries, having another proven NFL receiver available could become extremely valuable later in the season.
Is Jerry Jeudy Worth a Third-Round Pick?
This is where things become interesting.
A third-round selection is a meaningful asset. Teams regularly find starting-caliber players in that portion of the draft, and those players come with affordable rookie contracts.
Trading that selection for a veteran receiver means accepting both his financial commitment and the possibility that his inconsistent production continues.
However, Jeudy isn’t an ordinary receiver struggling to establish himself in the NFL.
We’re talking about a former first-round selection who has already recorded a 1,229-yard season and earned a Pro Bowl appearance. His talent is undeniable, and I believe much of his inconsistent production can be attributed to the quarterback situations he’s experienced.
For a rebuilding franchise, I would be reluctant to surrender a third-round selection.
But for a contender like Kansas City or San Francisco, the conversation changes.
A third-round pick is valuable, but so is the opportunity to strengthen a roster capable of competing for a Super Bowl right now.
If Kansas City believes Jeudy can produce alongside Mahomes, or San Francisco believes Shanahan can maximize his route-running ability, surrendering a third-round selection becomes a calculated gamble rather than an unreasonable decision.
Still, I would begin negotiations with a fourth-round offer.
My preferred deal would be a conditional fourth-round pick that becomes a third if Jeudy reaches agreed-upon production or playing-time incentives.
That would give Cleveland the opportunity to receive its desired compensation while protecting the acquiring team if Jeudy fails to deliver.
My verdict: A fourth-round pick is fair value. A third-round pick is a calculated gamble that only a genuine contender should consider.
Final Thoughts
Jerry Jeudy’s NFL career hasn’t matched the expectations created by his outstanding college career at Alabama, but I don’t believe the responsibility rests entirely on his shoulders.
Quarterback instability has been a major obstacle throughout his professional career, and his 2024 Pro Bowl season demonstrated what he can accomplish when an offense gives him opportunities.
Kansas City and San Francisco should be particularly interested because both franchises are competing for championships and possess the draft capital to pursue him. Philadelphia is another possibility if its receiving injuries continue to create problems.
For Cleveland, the decision comes down to whether Jeudy’s remaining upside is more valuable than the draft capital another team might offer.
For Jeudy, a trade could represent another opportunity to prove that the receiver who dominated at Alabama still has more to give in the NFL.
Sometimes a player doesn’t need to reinvent himself. He simply needs the right quarterback, the right coaching staff, and the right opportunity.
Jerry Jeudy might be one of those players.
Would you trade a third-round pick for Jerry Jeudy, or is a fourth-round selection the right price? Which team would be his best landing spot?
