The Las Vegas Raiders are 2–0.
In their first AFC West matchup of the season, the Raiders went into Los Angeles and defeated the Chargers 26–14 behind an efficient performance from Kirk Cousins and a defense that repeatedly punished Los Angeles for its mistakes.
The Chargers actually finished with slightly more total offense, but turnovers ultimately told the story.
First Quarter — Defenses Take Control
Neither offense could find the scoreboard during the opening quarter.
The Chargers had an opportunity to strike first on their opening possession, but Cameron Dicker’s 58-yard field-goal attempt hit the crossbar.
Things got worse for Los Angeles when Justin Herbert threw an interception to rookie cornerback Hezekiah Masses.
Las Vegas couldn’t turn the takeaway into points, however, and the first quarter ended scoreless.
Second Quarter — Raiders Find the Big Play
Las Vegas finally broke through early in the second quarter.
Kirk Cousins found Tre Tucker completely open downfield for a 40-yard touchdown, giving the Raiders a 7–0 advantage.
The Chargers responded.
Omarion Hampton finished a 69-yard drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game at seven.
But Las Vegas wasn’t finished before halftime.
Tucker struck again with a huge 42-yard reception late in the half, helping put the Raiders in field-goal range. Matt Gay then drilled a career-long 59-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining.
Raiders 10, Chargers 7 at halftime.
Third Quarter — Chargers Take the Lead, Raiders Answer
Los Angeles came out of halftime with life.
Herbert connected with Oronde Gadsden for a 10-yard touchdown, giving the Chargers their first lead of the afternoon at 14–10.
It didn’t last long.
Cousins answered by finding Cody White for a 13-yard touchdown late in the third quarter.
Just like that, Las Vegas was back in front.
The Raiders entered the fourth quarter leading 17–14 with the game still completely up for grabs.
Fourth Quarter — Raiders Defense Slams the Door
The Chargers had opportunities to respond, but mistakes eventually buried them.
With Los Angeles trying to put together a potential go-ahead drive late in the fourth quarter, Nakobe Dean forced Hampton to fumble.
Jeremy Chinn recovered it and returned the ball deep into Chargers territory.
Las Vegas wasted no time capitalizing.
Cousins found White again, this time for an 11-yard touchdown that stretched the Raiders’ lead to 24–14 with just under three minutes remaining.
Los Angeles’ nightmare finish wasn’t over.
A holding penalty against Joe Alt in the Chargers’ own end zone resulted in a safety, adding another two points for Las Vegas.
26–14. Ballgame.
Cousins Delivers Again
Kirk Cousins finished 19-of-29 for 253 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
Tre Tucker provided the explosive plays, catching five passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. Cody White only recorded two receptions — but both went for touchdowns.
That’s efficiency.
For Los Angeles, Herbert finished with 192 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Hampton produced 94 rushing yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, but his late fourth-quarter fumble became the game’s defining mistake.
Turnovers Tell the Story
The final yardage was almost identical.
Los Angeles: 310 yards.
Las Vegas: 305 yards.
But the Chargers turned the football over three times while the Raiders committed only one turnover.
That difference mattered.
Los Angeles repeatedly gave Las Vegas opportunities, and the Raiders eventually made them pay.
Final Thoughts
The Raiders have opened the season 2–0, and this one came on the road against a division rival.
Cousins made the throws he needed to make. Tucker provided the explosive plays. White delivered twice in the red zone. And when the Chargers had an opportunity to take control late, the Raiders defense created the turnover that changed everything.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles falls to 0–2 after another frustrating afternoon filled with mistakes.
The Chargers had enough offense to compete.
They simply couldn’t protect the football.
Raiders 26. Chargers 14. Las Vegas leaves Los Angeles undefeated.
