If there was ever a race that showed why Kimi Antonelli is leading the Formula 1 World Championship, it was this one.
Starting all the way down in 19th at his home Grand Prix, Antonelli entered Monza knowing that simply limiting the damage would have been a respectable afternoon. Instead, he drove through the field and somehow ended the day standing on the top step of the podium.
And he did it with his Mercedes teammate right behind him.

The race was chaotic almost immediately. Charles Leclerc’s afternoon ended in a massive crash at Parabolica, bringing out the red flag and completely changing the complexion of the race.
For Ferrari, it was a nightmare scenario at its home Grand Prix.
After the stoppage, George Russell led the way and looked to be in control. Russell had tremendous pace and spent much of Sunday looking like the man most likely to take victory.
But behind him, Antonelli was coming.
Starting 19th, Kimi carved his way through the field until he had already climbed all the way to P2 on pure race pace. What began as a damage-limitation afternoon had somehow turned into a Mercedes fight for the victory.
Then came the Virtual Safety Car.
Crucially, the VSC did not put Antonelli into second place. He had already done the hard work to get there. Instead, Mercedes used the opportunity to bring Kimi into the pits and bolt on a fresh set of medium tyres.
Now the chase was really on.
Antonelli emerged with fresh rubber and a chance to attack Russell for the victory. After starting on the penultimate row of the grid, Kimi was suddenly hunting down his teammate for P1 at his home Grand Prix.
Eventually, he completed the comeback.
P19 to P1 at Monza.
Russell may be disappointed after leading so much of the Grand Prix, but P2 completed a massive afternoon for Mercedes. A 1-2 at Monza is about as good as it gets for the team, particularly considering where Antonelli started.
Max Verstappen finished P3 to complete the podium, securing another strong result for Red Bull but having no answer for the Mercedes pair at the front.
But nobody was taking the spotlight away from Antonelli.
He came into his home Grand Prix carrying a 59-point championship lead and facing what looked like one of his most difficult Sundays of the season. Starting at the back should have been an opportunity for his championship rivals to finally take a meaningful chunk out of his advantage.
Instead, Kimi won the race.

In front of his home crowd.
From 19th.
There are races you win because you have the fastest car and everything goes according to plan. Then there are races that become part of the story of a championship.
This felt like the latter.
Kimi Antonelli is not simply protecting his championship lead anymore. Performances like this are showing exactly why he has it.
And for Mercedes, a Kimi Antonelli and George Russell 1-2 sends another pretty clear message:
The Silver Arrows are the Standard
Monza delivered the chaos, the comeback and another huge chapter in this championship fight. Now Formula 1 heads to Spain, where we will do it all over again next week at the brand-new Madrid circuit.
A new track. A new challenge. And absolutely no previous Formula 1 form to rely on.
