If you had Pierre Gasly taking pole position at Monza this weekend, I need to see the betting slip.
In one of the biggest qualifying surprises of the 2026 Formula 1 season, Pierre Gasly put his Alpine on pole position for the Italian Grand Prix with a stunning 1:21.786, beating George Russell by just 0.060 seconds. Oscar Piastri completed the top three.
And the craziest part? This did not completely come out of nowhere once qualifying started.
Gasly immediately showed Alpine had serious pace by topping Q1. What initially looked like one great lap quickly turned into something much more interesting. He remained right in the fight through Q2 before delivering when it mattered most in Q3.
Gasly Delivers the Shock of the Weekend
Coming into Saturday, almost nobody would have picked Alpine as the team to beat.
George Russell had looked like the clear favorite after Mercedes showed serious pace throughout practice. Then qualifying arrived and everything changed.
Gasly found another level when it mattered most.
At a circuit where confidence, braking precision and getting the perfect lap can make all the difference, Gasly and Alpine put everything together.
Tomorrow, he gets the reward: P1 at the Temple of Speed.
George Russell Comes Up Just Short
Russell will probably be disappointed not to take pole after looking so strong throughout the weekend, but starting second at Monza still puts him in an excellent position.
Mercedes clearly had the speed, and Russell entered qualifying looking like one of the favorites for pole.
He nearly finished the job.
Just six hundredths separated Russell from Gasly when the clock hit zero.
With championship leader Kimi Antonelli facing a grid penalty, Sunday gives Russell a major opportunity to capitalize. Antonelli entered the weekend 59 points ahead of Russell, making every point increasingly important as the championship fight continues.
Starting from the front row, Russell could not have asked for a much better opportunity.
Piastri Puts McLaren in the Fight
Oscar Piastri will start third after a strong qualifying performance for McLaren.
McLaren did not look like the obvious team to beat coming into qualifying, but Piastri worked his way into the fight at the front and ultimately secured third.
That puts him directly behind Gasly and Russell heading into Turn 1 tomorrow.
At Monza, that matters.
The run down to the first chicane is long, the slipstream is powerful, and starting on pole does not guarantee you will still be leading after the opening lap.
What a Race We Have Coming
Nobody expected Pierre Gasly, George Russell and Oscar Piastri to be the first three cars on the grid when this weekend began.
Yet here we are.
Gasly has the opportunity to turn one of the best qualifying performances of his career into a massive result for Alpine. Russell has a golden opportunity to attack both the race victory and Antonelli’s championship advantage. Piastri sits directly behind both of them waiting to capitalize on any mistake.
Gasly produced the shock on Saturday.
Now we find out whether he can finish the job on Sunday.
