Every NFL season comes with pressure, but some players enter the year carrying much more of it than others. For some, 2026 is about finally living up to the expectations that followed them into the league. For others, it is about proving they deserve the next major contract or another opportunity with their current team. And for one player on this list, absolutely nothing about his individual greatness needs to be proven, but there is still one major question left to answer.
Here are my five NFL players with the most to prove in 2026.
1. C.J. Stroud
This is contract time for C.J. Stroud. After an incredible rookie season in which he threw for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns and only five interceptions, Stroud looked like the next superstar quarterback in the NFL. The following two seasons have not quite lived up to that standard.
In 2025, Stroud threw for 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 14 games. Those are not bad numbers, but Houston is no longer a team that should be satisfied with simply getting solid quarterback play. The Texans are built to win right now.
Houston went 12 and 5 last season behind arguably the best defense in football, and after three consecutive trips to the Divisional Round, the next step is obvious. Compete for a Super Bowl.
Stroud could be the player who gets them there. He is now eligible for a contract extension, and 2026 gives him an opportunity to strengthen his case for the massive contract he is seeking. If Stroud can rediscover the player we saw during his rookie season while playing alongside this defense, Houston has everything it needs to become one of the most dangerous teams in football.
The talent has already been proven. Now Stroud needs to prove he can consistently play at that level when the Texans are ready to win it all.
2. Marvin Harrison Jr.
Marvin Harrison Jr. finds himself in a similar situation, although the question surrounding him is very different. Can he prove that he is the true number one receiver Arizona believed it was getting with the fourth overall pick?
Harrison has shown flashes through his first two seasons, recording 1,493 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, but the Cardinals have also watched other offensive weapons emerge around him.
Michael Wilson took a massive step forward in 2025, finishing with 78 catches for 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns. Trey McBride was even better, producing 1,239 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. Now add Jeremiah Love to the offense, and Arizona suddenly has the makings of a talented young group of playmakers.
Harrison needs to establish himself as one of its centerpieces.
The Cardinals could also eventually find themselves building around another young quarterback, whether that comes through the draft or someone such as Carson Beck developing into that role. Whoever is throwing the football in Arizona long term will need a reliable number one receiver.
Harrison has every physical tool necessary to become that player. With Wilson and McBride already proving what they can do, 2026 is Harrison’s opportunity to take his own leap, live up to the enormous potential that followed him into the NFL and show Arizona that he deserves to be one of the players this offense is built around for years to come.
3. Bryce Young
Bryce Young finally started changing the conversation around himself in 2025. After an extremely difficult beginning to his NFL career, the former number one overall pick produced his best season yet, throwing for 3,011 yards, 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 63.6 percent of his passes.
More importantly, Carolina made it back to the playoffs.
That progress was enough for the Panthers to exercise Young’s fifth year option, keeping him under contract through 2027. Now comes the next challenge.
Young is entering his fourth NFL season, and the Panthers need to determine whether the improvement they saw last year was another step toward him becoming their long term franchise quarterback. If Young continues progressing and turns Carolina into a consistent playoff team, the conversation will eventually move away from whether the Panthers should keep him and toward how much they are willing to pay him.
If he takes a step backward, those old questions will quickly return.
2025 showed us that Bryce Young’s career is moving in the right direction. 2026 is his opportunity to prove that Carolina should continue building around him.
4. Kyler Murray
For Kyler Murray, the contract situation is much simpler. He has one year to prove himself.
Minnesota signed Murray to a one year deal after his time in Arizona came to an end, and he has already won the Vikings’ starting quarterback job entering the 2026 season. Now he gets perhaps the best opportunity of his career to change the way people view him.
Murray will play under Kevin O’Connell, a coach who has already shown an ability to get excellent quarterback play out of his system, and he will have an offense filled with weapons around him.
The talent has never really been the question with Kyler. At his best, his arm talent, mobility and ability to create outside of structure can make him one of the most difficult quarterbacks in football to defend. The problem has been producing that level of football consistently and staying on the field.
Minnesota is giving him a fresh start. If Murray plays well and leads the Vikings to a successful season, he could convince Minnesota that he deserves to remain their quarterback beyond 2026 or put himself in position for another significant opportunity elsewhere.
If he struggles, it becomes much harder to argue that the situation around him was the problem in Arizona.
This is a true prove it season. Kyler has the coach. He has the weapons. He has the starting job. Now it is up to him.
5. Patrick Mahomes
Before anyone gets angry, let me make something very clear. Patrick Mahomes has absolutely nothing left to prove when it comes to his individual legacy.
He is already a three time Super Bowl champion, three time Super Bowl MVP, multiple time league MVP and one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play football.
This is about something different.
2026 is about proving that the Kansas City Chiefs are not finished.
For years, Kansas City felt inevitable. No matter what happened during the regular season, Mahomes, Andy Reid and the Chiefs always seemed to find themselves playing deep into January.
Then came 2025.
Kansas City missed the playoffs, Mahomes suffered a significant knee injury, and suddenly people began asking a question that would have sounded ridiculous only a short time earlier.
Is the Chiefs dynasty over?
Mahomes now has the opportunity to answer that question. Great players have bad seasons. Great teams eventually stumble. But the truly special ones find a way to respond when everyone starts believing their time has passed.
Mahomes does not need another ring to prove he is an all time great. But leading Kansas City back into championship contention after everything that happened last season would send another message to the rest of the NFL.
The Chiefs are not dead yet.
Final Thoughts
These five players are entering 2026 with very different types of pressure. C.J. Stroud has a championship caliber roster around him and a potentially enormous contract ahead of him. Marvin Harrison Jr. needs to establish himself as the centerpiece Arizona expected when it selected him fourth overall. Bryce Young needs to build on the best season of his career and prove he deserves to be Carolina’s quarterback for the long haul.
Kyler Murray has one season in Minnesota to revive his career and potentially earn himself another contract. Patrick Mahomes is trying to remind the entire NFL that writing off Kansas City might be a very, very bad idea.
That is what makes sports so much fun. Every new season gives players another opportunity to change the conversation.
