Most quarterbacks come into the biggest game of the season with some nerves. Joe Montana walked in and played it like a video game. He really earned that nickname “Joe Cool” that night because nothing phased him from start to finish.
Facing the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV, Montana completed 22 of 29 passes for 297 yards, five touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a 147.6 passer rating. San Francisco won 55-10, producing one of the most dominant victories in Super Bowl history.
Montana didn’t just win his fourth championship that night. He was nearly flawless.
Five Touchdowns, Zero Interceptions
Montana entered Super Bowl XXIV already established as one of football’s greatest quarterbacks, but what followed was a masterclass. He threw five touchdown passes without an interception, setting a Super Bowl record for touchdown passes in a game at the time.
Denver’s defense had absolutely no answer for him. Jerry Rice caught three of Montana’s touchdown passes, while John Taylor and Brent Jones caught the other two. Montana picked apart the Broncos possession after possession and needed only 29 pass attempts to do it.
This wasn’t a quarterback surviving the pressure of the Super Bowl. This was a quarterback completely controlling it.
Complete Domination
What separates this performance from many other legendary Super Bowl games is just how thoroughly Montana dominated. There was no dramatic fourth-quarter comeback, no last-second field goal, and no need for Montana to rescue San Francisco at the end.
He destroyed Denver from the beginning.
The 49ers scored 27 points in the first half and another 14 in the third quarter. By the time the fourth quarter arrived, the championship had essentially already been decided.
The final score was 55-10. A 45-point victory in the Super Bowl.
Another Super Bowl MVP
Montana was named Super Bowl MVP, giving him his third Super Bowl MVP award. Even more remarkable was his championship résumé: Montana had now started and won four Super Bowls, cementing his reputation as one of the greatest big-game quarterbacks the sport had ever seen.
When the lights were brightest, Joe Montana seemed completely comfortable. Super Bowl XXIV might have been the greatest example.
Why Montana Is Number Two
22 completions. 29 attempts. 297 yards. Five touchdowns. Zero interceptions. A 147.6 passer rating. A 55-10 victory. Super Bowl MVP.
There wasn’t much more Montana could have done.
Most quarterbacks would consider simply winning the Super Bowl the accomplishment of a lifetime. Joe Montana walked onto football’s biggest stage, threw five touchdowns without turning the ball over, won by 45 points, collected another Super Bowl MVP, and went home with his fourth ring.
He made the Super Bowl look like a video game.
That’s why Joe Montana’s performance in Super Bowl XXIV comes in at number two on my list of the greatest individual Super Bowl performances of all time.
