In 2025, we saw flashes of the raw talent of Kimi Antonelli. In his very first Formula 1 race as a rookie, Antonelli charged to P4 in the rain, immediately showing that the moment wasn’t too big for him. He finished his rookie season with three podiums and a Sprint pole in Miami. There were bumps along the way, including crashes, DNFs, and the usual rookie mistakes, but one thing was impossible to deny: the kid was fast.
Then 2026 arrived.
Antonelli started the season by qualifying P2 in Australia, and that was only the beginning. He went on an unbelievable run, winning five consecutive races from China all the way through Monaco. Different countries, different circuits, different conditions. It didn’t matter. Kimi Antonelli was the fastest.
He has pushed the Mercedes W17 to its absolute limit, both literally and figuratively. Even with DNFs and mechanical trouble costing him points, Antonelli still leads the Drivers’ Championship by 49 points and has left his experienced teammate George Russell chasing him.
And remember, Kimi is still only 19 years old.
When Toto Wolff made the decision to promote Antonelli into one of the most coveted and demanding seats in Formula 1, there were plenty of questions. Mercedes wasn’t putting him in a backmarker where he could quietly learn his craft. They were putting a teenager into one of the benchmark teams in Formula 1 and asking him to perform immediately.
Kimi is proving the doubters wrong and proving Toto right. Promoting a 19-year-old into a Mercedes wasn’t a mistake. It was a masterstroke.
Antonelli has already become the second-youngest Grand Prix winner in Formula 1 history and the youngest driver ever to lead the World Drivers’ Championship. He isn’t driving like someone who’s simply happy to be there. He’s driving like someone who expects to win.
He may or may not win the title this year. Who really knows? But one thing is for certain: this kid is quick. Formula 1 can change in an instant, and there is still plenty of racing left, but what Antonelli has already shown at just 19 years old should have the rest of the grid paying attention.
Kimi Antonelli looks like the next superstar of Formula 1, and I believe what we’re watching right now is only the beginning. When his career is eventually finished, I don’t think we’ll be talking about whether Kimi Antonelli ever became a World Champion.
